VIU 70, CBC 59
There will be a new national champion in 2026.
VIU is heading back to the gold medal game after a physical victory over the CBC Bearcats.
At first, things looked grim. CBC took a 23-14 lead into the early stages of the second quarter, but the Mariners responded with a run of their own. VIU never trailed after the halfway mark of the second quarter, grinding out a physical win.
Kaia Simpson and Trista Thorn tied for VIU's lead in points with 14 each. Simpson pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double, while Thorn added three assists.
Katelyn Mallette led all scorers with 20 points on a very efficient 10-14 clip. Though Kagari Tomita was held to just one basket, she led the game with eight assists.
VIU will face the Douglas Royals for a PACWEST title tomorrow night. Both teams will represent the PACWEST at this year's CCAA national championship in Montreal. Conversely, the CBC Bearcats will play for a bronze medal tomorrow against Capilano, then set their sights on next year's national championship, hosted by CBC in Abbotsford.
