Few people in Nanaimo are happier than Kye Kotapski-Tinga. He leads the Mariners in points per game and is a lock for at least a PACWEST all-star bid.
As a Christmas present, the Mariners reunited him with one of his buddies from Antigonish.
Keyonte Beals has seen success at every level he's played. He spent the prior two seasons at St. Francis Xavier, helping lead them to the national title game in 2023. Last season, he averaged 12.4 points per game on 43.8% shooting, including a 37.1% clip from beyond the arc. He gets most of his work done on the perimeter, meaning he'll fit right in to Matt Kuzminski's fast-paced motion offense.
The X-Men used a guard-heavy lineup last season, mostly feeding the ball to DJ Jackson and his team-high 24.4 points per game. VIU's offense uses an even stronger perimeter presence, largely due to the absences of Markus Modrovic and Breandan McLaughlin.
Adding Beals to VIU's guard room transforms their already lethal offense into a unit that can compete with the top teams in the country. With Markus Modrovic's return set to beef up the defense, this team is primed for a national title run.
